Guinyard was ranked as the 48th best guard in the Portal out of 1,300 guards. Prior to playing at UT Martin he was a JUCO All American at the same college where Tre Clark played.

VCU,GW,GM , SLU, SJU, and Dayton have all been killing it in the Portal.  Dru has started strong with the pick up of Hugley and Jimmie Williams.  Both are key pieces.  We have 4 roster openings and, IMHO, at least two of these are high priority, can't miss, needs.

Prioity #1.  We need a big, seasoned, skilled point guard.  We can't rely on freshmen guards, nor can we rely on Hall to fill that need.  Hall had serious knee surgery, and as of the end of the season, almost a year after his surgery was not in full contact practice with the team.  He may be fully recovered and able to fill that need net season, but not worth the risk.

Priority #2.  We need a strong power forward.  We need a tough nut, big strong guy who can back his guy to the basket, drive the ball, and get his share of put backs.  In other words, a better version of Corbett.  From what I have seen on videos of Alex Williams he is more of a 2/3 than a 3/4.  I could be wrong but that is my opinion.  Also, I view Jellum as a future piece, he needs to develop more.

Priority #3.  I also agree that we need another backup center.  Not as critical as the top two priorities but still needed.  Here is where a kid like Brisco could fit in nicely while gaining some experience.

Finally I would give the last spot to a walk on to save some money.

If the Williams signing caused Edwards to leave then I am disappointed in Edwards. By all accounts Max is a good kid, but he has some issues. He was a disaster in the non conference part of last season where he played major minutes.  He was so bad that Dru had to bench him. It wasn't until the end of conference play that he started to play up to his potential. Even then he was inconsistent.

While I was hoping that Dru had finally gotten through to the kid and that he could possibly start and be a leader he decides to leave just before the Portal closes. I don't know what his reason was. If his reason was because he did not like competition, I wish him well. I am sure some team will pick him up. I want a team of alpha dogs that believe in themselves and their team and willing to compete and earn what they get. I have confidence that this is the type of team Dru's building. Go Dukes!

I wonder what came first, Eli deciding to leave or Hugly signing? We will never know but maybe Dru knew all along Eli was leaving so he signed Hugley. If I thought one person was leaving this off-season, it was Eli. I didn’t want it, but I felt he was the one to go. He played so sparingly in the early season. It made me wonder if he just didn’t gel with the coaches. Maybe he made his mind up in December he wasn’t staying and maybe it was well known.

If I were to guess, the signing of Hugley caused Wilbourn to leave.  If he decided early to leave, I see no advantage to him to wait until the last week of the Porta to enter.  I hope the Hugley trade works out.  I can't blame kids doing what they believe is in their best interest.  I was hoping Dru could sell Wilborn on playing the PF slot.

Hugley has not been the same player since his knee injury and surgery. I view him like I did Mahorcic.  I hope he is fully recovered and becomes an All League player, but would be happy if he can give us 10 minutes of solid play per game. I believe both Dixon and Wilborn will benefit as they can possibly play some minutes together with the additional big. We now need an experienced big point guard to captain the ship.

I agree Phoenix. I like this addition though because I think it allows Wilborn to play more at the PF position. Hugley is definitely a space eater with his big body.

Yes, the 15 scholarship limit is in effect next year for men’s basketball. Another change is that you can now split scholarships between players; basketball is no longer a headcount sport (one player=one scholarship). Finally, the cost of these scholarships will count against a school’s NIL cap. Thus, more scholarships given results in less NIL money available. NIL money is now being handled by the schools themselves; no more NIL collectives. A whole new landscape for next year is in play.

If I understand correctly, one of the harshest aspects of the new NCAA 15 player roster rule is that it applies to walk on players. Kids that have, in some cases, invested years in the program are no longer officially on the team. Duquesne had 5 walk on players last season. Such is college basketball today 😟

CLK, you are correct regarding the hard and fast roster limit of 15. It’s going to be interesting to see how the Dukes and other schools build and manage their roster.

I would assume that Duquesne will establish a line item budget for men’s basketball player costs which would include scholarship value (probably around $60,000 per scholarship) and NIL. Let’s say Duquesne’s budget will be $2 million. Now build a roster.

Do you offer 10 scholarships total? There goes 30% of your budget. Do you give those 10 scholarships to 10 players or offer up full scholarships to 8 players and half scholarships to 4 players?

Continuing on the above example/exercise, you now have $1.4 million left to pay NIL money. How do you distribute it? Do you focus on 3 really good players (which may cost you a $1 million in NIL) and then spread the remainder around to the other scholarship players? It’s the great unknown.

I came across this site. Found it interesting to look at; I have no idea about the validity or significance. But someone put a lot of time, thought and effort into this so to me it was worth an ex

Let’s assume that Dinkins and Corbett are finished with their eligibility. Which players do you NOT want to lose in the transfer portal?

I’ll start with Eli Wilborn. He has the feet, hands, body size and a toughness that has the makings of him developing into a top 25 player in the conference.

Eli has certainly established himself as a key player.  If he can learn to play without fouling he has All League potential.  I would like to see more of Eli and Dixon together on the court now that Chabi and Necas are back.

If Dinkins has an additional year and comes back, and I really hope he does, and if nobody transfers we only have one more scholarship. I don't think that is likely.

Interesting comment about Dinkins. Do you have any intel that suggests he could be back for another season?

Motor wrote:

As far as Lawson is concerned I believe he is signed and is a true PG.

Hall probably a 2G does have 2 years but maybe 3 if the jr college rule goes into effect. Which could potentially give Dinkins another year.

Williams I believe is a SF who definitely looks like a PF but can shoot 3

Someone mentioned previously I believe CLK that 15 scholarship are available!

Of course we are sure to lose a couple players to portal also

Arness Lawson is listed as a point guard and I believe he has the ability to be an impact player as a freshman.

Also the NCAA ruled in December that as of now that one year of eligibility will be added if they meet certain requests. I believe Tre meets those requirements.

Moronic.  Bringing Coach Dru’s family into this.   Moronic.

There is no need for name calling.  I actually agree with the main point of the post. The substitution patters seems to be geared to giving everyone minutes as opposed to playing your best players and riding the hot hands. There are a couple players on this team whose performance would only justify spot minutes, not extended play. Our bench in reality is not as deep talent wise as we thought. I am of the opinion that we should play our best players as many minutes that they can handle. This philosophy seems to work well for the Bonnies.

I should add that my comment was more about the season not just last night's game. I also think Dru will be a very good coach in this League.  He has some key pieces for next year but needs to find a way to bring in more talent.

Coach Dru and staff did a great job of game planning and game day coaching. We no longer have a one size fits all defense. That 3-2 zone with Tre, Jakub, and Matus up front and Corbett and Dixon protecting the rim was suffocating. Defense travels and wins championships. Go Dukes

Edwards is struggling big time right now with his game, and I feel bad for him.  He does not look like the same player we saw at GW for the last two years.  Last year he averaged 12 ppg and shot 43% overall and 36% 3P%.  He was perceived as the center piece of our recruiting class.  This young man has tremendous talent.  Whatever he is going through I hope that God will give him the peace and strength to push through it.  This team needs him, more importantly he needs to do it for himself.
