Hope he gets a HC job somewhere, too young to retire. Lost to #1 Jacksonville St. in what was an "elite 8" match. Congratulations on a great season. Maybe Dru didn't get the Cleveland St. job because they thought he would be likely poached by Duquesne or someone else fairly quickly. Maybe he already had the DU assistant offer in his pocket. Just spitballin'. The last coach to retire was Red Manning in 1974. His assistant, John Cinacola, took over the program. I remember being happy to see Cinacola go, but those were some tough shoes for him to fill. You know, when I find myself wondering why some people always seem to have some complaint to speak to the manager about, I just tell myself that they must be the people who are opening their wallets and bankrolling the whole program. I crack myself up sometimes. There is no debating the success enjoyed by KD in the last 3 weeks of his time at DU. Further, he has left the program in infinitely better shape than he found it. I am happy for him, his staff, the players, Dave Harper, the university community at-large, and, most of all, we long suffering fans. However, he most certainly did not do what he said he would do. Phil, the story is still being written, it's too early to judge. I'm listening to the Purdue radio broadcast. They are insufferable. The real question is, when will we get sick of Dru puns? I vote never. Dru-Dru Rah-Rah!!! Supposedly the deal is done per Rothstein. If you want to watch the game, looks like you're going to have to declare yourself to be a Purdue fan and fork over $10+ to join Big10+ for a month. All part of the Power Conference Welfare and Entitlement Program. Time to open up your hearts and wallets for these poor neglected charity cases. Shook off a little rust and got the win. Nicely done. Purdue is next. A Miller? A Miller? We need a Hurley! It's a gamble whatever you do. I'm choosing continuity over chaos. Getting into the coaching scramble with many, many teams way more desperate than us right now could take weeks. We would be dealing with snubs, false hopes, and bidding wars. Or we could be hitting the portal hard while we have some juice, and maybe finding a DiMichele or two in the high school ranks. Cleary is not D1. They are NAIA. Animus! Thanks for the memories. Totally agree with CLK’s version of the cheer. My only other recollection was that he would start with “Are you ready?” Maybe I’m just dreaming that You are right. I had forgotten that part. Also reminded me of the "Under the Arm, Pitt!" cheer and the "special" Duquesne response to the "Hail to Pitt" fight song. I hope to get to do it again before I die. That's how I remember it. Mossie would wave his arms from side to side over his head and use the "ahoyas" to make sure he had the attention of the whole arena, before continuing the cheer. The source of this info also had some details of the very sexy details of what the LeBron camp is supposedly offering to lock the job down for DJ. Because the details of those details would expose the source, I am going to leave them out. Suffice it to say, during DJ would most certainly come with unusual benefits to a program like ours. If many of the possible returnees (players and coaches) bolt because of a wholesale coaching change, what you are describing in your other note is a full-scale rebuild. Why would we want to do that at this point? It's more of a mine field than a gold mine. Keeping in mind that this whole thread is based on speculation, and now, well connected rumors, I say if it ain't broke, don't fix it. Kind of sad it's come to all that. But, we have no choice but to play the game. I would like to nominate rosceaux for the Duquesne Medal of Honor for courage and action far beyond the call of duty. He continued to go into that nest of vipers--The A10 Basketball Forum--and defend Duquesne with dignity and a sense of humor. It must be some comfort to you that now the Bona fans must look to fixing their own house instead of ours. Thanks. While cheering on Dan Burt's excellent women's team, I'm wondering if there are any plans to honor the men's team with a ceremony at the Coop? If Gonzaga joins the Big East, what happens to the hopes and dreams of all those teams who were going to be the Gonzaga of the East? This isn't the end, it's the beginning. Surveyed the Illini board a little bit. We are not flying in under the radar anymore, but they are confident. (No one has seen our best offensive game in awhile. This would be a good time.--me) Smart comments after reading some of those morons at BYU.

The last assistant coach to be promoted to head coach was Mike Rice; this took place in 1978 after John Cinacola was fired.

Upon taking the job he spoke repeatedly of multiple championship banners being hung, winning big with or without a new arena, erasing all the built-in excuses for not winning, & said, specifically, that he would have failed if 5 years in Duquesne was a "middle-of-the-pack" A-10 program. There is also no debating that he habitually used construction delays effect on his team's success & exageratted player injuries as excuses for poor results, his average finish in the conference regular season was 8th (never better than 5th), & had the team dead last after 5 years.
I am posting this now because I know that for years to come I will have to read how awesome the entire Dambrot era was to be a Duquesne fan just as we do for the RE years. I am trying to get my frustration with such rubbish out my system early.

On another note, I think that many posters are discounting the idea that an outside candidate is likely to bring players from his current job as well as high school commits & the portal personnel that candidate has already been working. That could be a goldmine.
