Men's Basketball » POINT GUARD - Tarence Guinyard - 6'2" » Yesterday 6:52 pm

It is interesting that Guinyard had 3 teammates this year with more total assists than him & that nobody else on the team scored more than 12 points per game. Perhaps Tarence was asked to be more aggressive as a scorer while others focused on doing the setup work?

I love the volume of FTs he shot. Need him to get his 3pt percentage to 35% & FT closer to 80%.

Most exciting is the 53% he shot on 2pt shots.

Good stuff Phoenix.

He is definitely a strong scorer. He seems excellent on the drive as both a finisher & penetrator while showing nice athleticism & strength.

He has also been a great positional rebounder at all his stops. I wonder how that will translate to a higher level of competition.

Any concerns about his assist rate or the fact that one or 2 places that follow portal movements list him as a shooting guard?

I failed to include Jimmie Williams on my list of strong 3pt shooters. 37.4% as a juco & 40% this year at USF on 2.33 attempts per in only 19 minutes a game.

After shooting better than 43% from 3 point range this season, I think Cam Crawford qualifies as a sniper.

Alex Williams is a career 39% 3pt shooter on more than 250 attempts.

These 2 are a good start, but the  Dukes need a 3rd player to shoot 37% or better on high volume to keep the floor spread. Maybe Jake and/or Necas will show this kind of improvement.

Just how long is, "a long ass time"?

Is Jay a right-handed jump shooter that is stronger finishing drives with his left? These highlights & the ones from his time at Lamar sure make it look that way.

I found this blurb about his juco days very encouraging:

Junior College:
A two-year letterwinner ... A two-star prospect ... Averaged 18.4 points and pulled down 4.6 rebounds per game as a sophomore ... Also ranked among the national leaders dishing 7.8 assists per game ... Was a 75-percent free throw shooter and connected on 34 percent of his three-point attempts during his second season ... As the starting point guard, Buckley led TVCC to the NJCAA National Tournament during his rookie season ... Scored 34 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists in a Region XIV tournament victory.

I would be more impressed if instead of editorializing on how the players may feel about the modern phenomenon of social media criticism, Zach would report on how player injury recovery is going, how Lawson's legal situation has affected his status as a Duke, deep dives on newly committed players, etc... If he is the Dukes beat writer for PSN, this is all information I would expect him to be reporting.

Also, I disagree with his assertion that the past season should be graded as an "Incomplete". While not a total disaster, the 24-25 season, when taken as a whole to include win/loss record, in-game coaching, player development, roster management, & player retention gets a C grade from from me. 1 or 2 of those non-conference loses combined with the late season meltdowns against Dayton, Davidson, & SBU at the A-10 Tournament have more bearing on a full season evaluation of the team than any other factor I can think of.

This is from before he went to St.Louis more than 2 years ago.

He appears to be a lefty with some ability to also finish with his right hand.

I am pleased with this commitment. Another A-10 team saw fit to sign him out of high school/give him some experience,he is physically mature, & has multiple years of eligibility. Here's hoping he is 100% healthy!

More legit size (and hopefully depth)in the frontcourt to go with Hugley, Dixon, Necas, & Jellum. When was the last time the Dukes had 5 guys 6'9" or better?

Find that PG!!!

I found it interesting that Tristan did not list Lawson as being on next year's roster but did list Brandon Hall as a PG.

You want to read the article about areas of need for the Dukes. I could not link it directly, but I think this should lead you there.

His take on the PG spot is newsworthy.

I have no issue with Lawson or Aekins as players. I just think that having the PG position in the hands of freshmen is a poor plan.

My concern is compounded by the unknown that is Lawson's legal status.

In reading about Brandon Hall as a high school recruit I found that he was listed as a PG quite often. That strikes me as interesting.

Does anyone know why Hall did not play his freshman year at ETSU? Did he take a redshirt year? Might he have 3 years of eligibility left?

The Dukes also need another big. There is not enough depth at C/PF.

Jimmie's age/physical maturity, experience against D-1 competition in a respected mid-major conference, 3pt shooting numbers, multiple years of eligibility, size, & All-American award at the juco level are all positive indicators.

For what it is worth, he is rated as a 3 star portal recruit with a very respectable composite value score of 69 points.

Elijah Crawford is a 36, Matus is a 51, Hugley is a 53, Chabi is a 55, Wilborn is a 63, Dinkins is a 78, & the highest rating for any player is 88. Remaining years of eligibility factors into the score.

Here's hoping Jimmie is a steal that needed a year's experience in a D-1 program to get his bearings!

When did he graduate high school? Did he go to the same school as Sin Carry?
Did he play at another school for a year before going to Wallace or did he get injured & redshirt there?

Maybe he went to the now defunct Notre Dame College in Ohio?

A power forward from Cushing Academy, Jellum has a terrific combination of skill, athleticism, and postional size, making him one of the top unsigned prospects in the region. He’s a long 6’9″ that just knows how to play offensively, both as a scorer and ball mover. He can play with his back to the basket, has soft touch on his jump hook, and, in space, does a great job of attacking the rim off the bounce. While he pops athletically in space, his seperating skill is his ability to shoot the basketball, as he proved to be a high level player in screen and pop situations.

The "region" referred to is New England including MA, VT, ME, CT, & NH. He is now ranked as the 73rd best player in NE. That is up from 98th in January. This is out of the 506 prospects ranked for the region.

I haven't seen anything from/about Dom Aekins since before he went to prep school that says he is committed to Duquesne. Does anyone have any recent info confirming his commitment is still in place?

Provided this doesn't send Wilborn, Necas, or Dixon into the portal, I am encouraged by this news.

John has had a challenging journey throughout his college life. I wish him well, but am tempering my expectations despite his significant upside as a player.

It was fairly common knowledge that VCU gave Shulga in the neighborhood of $750K to come back last season even though he had an offer for $900K to go elsewhere.

If you had to guess what amount we can spend on any one player in the portal, what number would you say?   Is $250K too much?   Can we go higher?    I saw the big time, P5 national names, that we arent in on, are going to get b/w $2.5-3M.   Where do A10 teams stand?  I assume Dayton and VCU are near the top.

Your intuition is dead on. He was dismissed from the team on 12/12/24 for violating team policies.

He was always expected to redshirtdue to a knee injury, but got introuble while sitting out.

For now, the collectives are much more likely to evolve than disappear. While there will be much litigation to determine the legality of this, the collectives are fast reorganizing as a back channel for schools to funnel money to players without having to sweat the Title IX compliance issues that the schools do. Collectives remain private entities that are subject to very little federal regulation.

Collectives also have the ability to get player agents & family members included in their deals so that recruiting goes their school's way. This too gives an enormous advantage to the haves over the have nots.

Because of the wild posts, I couldn't resist looking up some stats from the 6 years & 188 games RE led Duquesne.
-Teams averaged 76.7 points per game while giving up 74
-Scored 100 or more points 10 times
-Scored 90 or more points 23 times
-Home game average attendance is 3,088
(Even after taking out the 2 Covid/renovation seasons, that is 28% better than KD's numbers. That's pretty sad given the shiny new arena he had to work with.)
-Winning percentage .527  99-89 overall 46-50 in conference

I must admit that I was surprised by just how much scoring his teams did, particularly over the first three seasons. It was certainly nowhere near 90 points per game, let alone 100, but still. I didn't remember it that way at all.

Damian Saunders is still my all-time favorite Duke, with senior-year Ajax running a close second.

What a shame it is that RE didn't turn all those points into more wins. Ugh!
