Here is something we have not thought about or discussed.... We have a new coach who has not coached a single game I believe at any level. Yet most of us believe he is going to do a great job and keep us winning 20 games a year. Let's say we are right, and Dru is a great hire and we keep winning. How in the world will we keep Dru if he is a superstar on the rise? Dru and his marketing and business team, who are not doubt excellent, will try and maximize his value, as they should. I do not believe that practice have started yet. This is in sharp contrast to Dambrot who seemed to have his teams practice nearly year-round, and went long and hard for during the summer. Returning players probably love this break as do their body's. Heard Dixon had another knee surgery but would like to know if anyone else has heard the same Momentum is continuing for sure! The more I think about coach Terry W leaving, the more uncomfortable I am becoming for several reasons. As mentioned in a previous post, he seemed to be the coach with the best relationship with the players. He also has a ton of experience and was a prior head coach. He has deep ties in the AAU world, and can interact with all types of parents, which we should not underestimate. This also does not sit right as it is another example of Dambrot either throwing loyalty out the door by not protecting coach Terry or buy Dru throwing Dambrot under the bus. Either way, the dismissal of coach Terry is not good for the program, is not a good look, and takes away more of the culture we had at the end of this season. We need 3-point shooting. None of our returners with the exception of Kareem even sniff 40% from three. This is extremely important that we get some players who can hit threes. And not just spot up threes when wide open but hitting threes off the move and off the dribble. The longer it goes without one of these guys committing the less likely it is one of them will commit. KD used to get these guys to commit pretty quickly as he was a closer. I have heard Terry Weigand and another coach were fired. This means there is a new group in charge of these visits and the pitch. Terry seemed very experienced, the kids liked him, and he could relate to parents. If this is true that two coaches were fired, this is a disappointment. Bummed about this one, and as I mentioned in previous posts these players from the roster are part of this new culture. This is especially true with Barba as he stayed the longest. Had several opportunities to meet him and he is a great and funny young man. The fact I got to have a beer with him in Shales says it all! I also enjoyed watching him make dozens of 3's in warmups as well as watching his athleticism and his good demeanor. As luckymcd mentioned, he was one of our bigger recruits. Likely another player KD did wrong, so I will not blame Dru on this one. Barba also gave a shout out to Dru so there seems to be no bad blood. I really hope Barba is the last to leave, and I really hope the current coaching staff stays in place, with the addition of Dur's brother. I have heard LA has a late second round pick. Interesting I hope they all stay as well. A big part of the culture and I know a lot of these players like Rick and Terry I wish him the best as well! Looked good when he played and is a super athlete. Hopefully, we do not see any more. Really hoping we keep the core together. Need to keep as much of this winning culture here as we can. It is way too early to start questioning DJ. Love the debate, but for goodness sake he was just hired. Most of us at some point had bad things to say about KD. We can dislike him as a person as much as we want, and maybe he is or was a bad guy to many of the players that ran in and out of here. However, we just did something not accomplished in many decades and he was the coach. This is a fact. He left on a high note and delivered on getting the Dukes to the NCAA. The Dukes are very likely going to be included in this year's edition of "One Shining Moment"!!!! Unreal! Woke up and am so glad I was not dreaming last night. Our Dukes are dancing! Although I am no fan of Dambrot, we are having a good finish to the season. If he can get us to win 2-3 games in the tournament next week he should be commended, as this will be his best year and he would surpass his total of 1 win in the tournament the last six years. We can say be beat teams that had starters missing, but a win is a win. This team is starting to win games they should win and have won a couple most of thought they would not. Unbelievable win! We really needed Grant to have a great game and he came through. Rozier made a huge contribution, and the coaching staff and the players were focused and are creating momentum heading into the tournament. Need to pick up a win tomorrow! Hoping for another good showing and hopefully a good day by Grant and a healthy Dixon. Great points. Our next coach needs to be seasoned professional with prior experience interacting with wealthy donors and raising money. The game has changed and money matters. We need someone who can develop a culture an environment so players WANT to stay AND has the ability to help raise money to pay the players. A big ask, but this is the world we are now living in. The A-10 is the 2nd strongest basketball only conference, trailing the Big East. The A-10 is in seven of the top 30 media markets, including New York (1), Chicago (2), Philadelphia (4), Washington (9), Charlotte (22), St. Louis (23) and Pittsburgh (26). Every single conference game is available to view via national broadcast (79) games, regional and streaming. The conference tournament from the 2nd round on is broadcast on national TV. City please take this as a serious question and me not trying to be a smart ass. How does Fordham score 26 points in the first half and 53 in the second without some adjustments? Rose no longer in foul trouble. Dixon unable to play, our key rim protector. A more lenient whistle from the officials. Us going into shells or playing as individuals when the going got tough. All these things led to a huge momentum shift that got Fordham feeling good about themselves. From there, the rim was 10 feet in diameter. What tactical adjustments did you see? Also me not trying to be a smart ass. Here's a question, why would you not go from a 3 guard offense to a 3 big/2guard offense when it was apparent we were getting pushed around. KD has too much size sitting on the bench that hardly get in? And I don't mean at the start of the game, but when we could have used some size because we were getting our butts kicked. Andrei, both Drames, Necas, Williams, Hronsky ? Even Dusan had just 10 minutes? Barre 8 minutes? Heck, why not adjust and try sometime else when the game isn't going to change with the present game plan? I can't imagine that KD doesn't play both Drames at the same time, I mean not once? It just might surprise the opponent to see this team switch it up. The Drame twins were on that St .Petes team that got to the elite eight, I think they both know how to win, yet only one gets in there all season? What this staff is doing to the Drame twin who sits the bench and especially Savrasov is so bad. Savrasov was the first 5th year talked into coming in here and he was promised a role and minutes he is not getting. There is absolutely no way our record would be worse than it is if Andre was playing 20+ minutes in every game and just left alone to do what he did previously without being at and yelled and yanked after the slightest mistake. If Andre is upset who can blame him. He was lied to and Candidate #4 is Jerrod Calhoun at Youngstown State University. Coach Calhoun is a short drive from us and has been recruiting in the area for a couple of decades. He comes from the Bob Huggins coaching tree, and has experience recruiting at nearly every level, from D2 where he built one of the most successful programs at Fairmont State, to WVU, to YSU. National TV 🤮🤮Embarrassing. I am done. Dambrot can’t game coach. Calhouh at YST should be the next coach. Pathetic Calhoun is another excellent candidate, and I will post about him shortly on the other thread mentioning my list of people to inverview Mitch Henerson would be a home run. A winner in every sense of the word and he can flat out coach. He has experience recruiting high character players and he has built a fantastic culture. Additionally, he is not scared half to death to play tougher opponents. Lukewarm on Wade due to past allegations. Mack allegedly is a hard ass like Dambrot and word on the street is that players hate him. We need a sizeable shift in character, culture and roster stability and a coach like Mitch Henderson fits the bill perfectly. Mitch Henderson is my Candidate #3! Not surprising we lost last night, although I was really hopeful,we would wiin this one. Candidate #2 Brandin Knight – Associate Head Coach – Rutgers. This guy has some ties to Pittsburgh having played and coached at Pitt. He has extensive recruiting experience in the Northeast. He was a winner at every level and is the associate head coach for one of the most respected head coaches and “good guys” in the game, Steve Pikiell The friction appears to be between the players and the coaches. I agree that the players seem to like one another. The Bekelja and TDM reference as Dambrot favorites were from another person's post that we have been commenting on. They exactly fit the narrative as they both left.

Have no idea how this group will be and have no idea how this will work with a new coach with no coaching experience. However, very hopefully optimistic and its a good sign that the new coach is not running his players into the ground and letting these kids enjoy some much-needed free time Men's Basketball » From today's local fish wrapper » 5/05/2024 5:22 pm

We have a 39-year old coach who has never coached a single basketball game and has very little experience recruiting. We are all acting like we are guaranteed to return to the NCAA just because we hired Dru and have 5-6 players returning. We are behind other teams in our league in terms of having a complete coaching staff, and also with building the roster.

Anyone have updates on the staff? Is DJ keeping everyone?Men's Basketball » Dru Joyce III - Duquesne's New Head Coach » 3/30/2024 1:45 pm
The test for DJ began this week. There is a culture with the team that just won the A-10 and won an NCAA game.
We have the following scholarship players able to return:
Dixon - 2 years remaining
Barre - 2 years remaining
Necas - 3 years remaining
Hronsky - 2 years remaining
Barba - 3 years remaining
Rozier - 2 years remaining
Nicholls - 3 years remaining
DiMichaele - 3 years remaining - assume he gets a scholarship now
This is the culture of the Dukes basketball team that just made us all happy. The first test for DJ is to keep this group intact. Think about this - If DJ can say to all portal recruits that he was able to keep every returning player and keep the winning culture, this will go a long way to getting people to believe what he is selling. If he starts running players out this week, others may question his integrity, as this seems like a very tight group of young men. Same thing holds true if 2 or 3 of these kids leave. It is critical to keep this group together.
This leaves 5-6 scholarships to find top-tier players to replace what we lost and to upgrade some positions. This is plenty. We do not want to go right back to what KD was doing and turn most of the roster over again,
Secondly, he needs to name his staff, and he needs to do this quickly. Keeping most of the current staff likewise retains culture. Would love to see him add his brother or a young proven recruiter with national contacts.

Men's Basketball » When Will the Question of Coach's Status Be Addressed » 3/08/2024 7:48 am
In terms of us underperforming, it is really hard for any of us to know how a team will perform with a new roster each year. As others have mentioned, the landscape in college basketball has changed with the portal and NIL.
Regardless of who the coach is next year we will need to find 3-5 starters via transfer. While we have some good role players who may return, the only impact starter who can return is Dixon. I do not see how Chabi returns if Dambrot/Dur are here, as he seems to be in their doghouse.
I have concerns that it will be more difficult for them to attract 5th years next year because they have two 5th years that they are not playing. Any player doing their research will want this addressed and may be less likely to buy what they are selling.
It is going to be very difficult to replace what Dae Dae and Jimmy give us. We need to find a couple of wings who can shoot 40% from deep, and we need bigs who can play in the post. And if this staff remains and does find the wings who have a history of making 3's they need to play them enough minutes to let the math work in their favor.
We should win tomorrow, and we should win at least our first game next week in New York. Anything less will be a dissapointment.

Note: women's basketball also benefits strongly from the A10 conference affiliation. Every single conference game is available to view via national broadcast games, regional and streaming.
Very insightful comments!
Lower level conferences do not have this luxury. For example, take the Colonial Athletic Association (Charleston, Hofstra, UNCW, Drexel, etc.) - their major streaming partner is FloHoops (with some schools picking up the production costs for some regional and ESPN+ streaming games). Including their conference championship, they only have 27 men's games nationally televised on CBSSN.
The A10 is where the Dukes belong; there really is no better alternative. That being said, there are a couple of disturbing trends in process that the A10 must correct quickly.
1) Not getting multiple NCAA bids
2) Inability to schedule Power 6 / Top 50 teams as part of the non-conference schedules.
These somewhat go hand in hand. It has been very tough for most A10 teams to schedule top 50 games. This year, the A10 has played 25 top 50 teams, compiling a 5-20 record. Dayton alone had 5 games, finishing 3-2. The rest of the conference was 2-18 versus top 50 competition. It's just not a Duquesne problem, but a league wide issue (excepting Dayton) to both schedule and then win a big game. The NET has Dayton at 20; then the Bonnies at 71, with the next eight (8!) teams bunched between 72 and 108. Those numbers would have skewed significantly downward if there were 4 or 5 more non conference Men's Basketball » Game Thread - Fordham University Rams (A) » 2/25/2024 8:57 am

Coach Calhoun has also worked at two places with very little resources and still managed to win. He has never had the opportunity to be a HC at a university committing funds to his program. Hie has probably had to pick up the phone and ask an alumnus for the funds to buy a new shooting machine. He may flourish in a program like ours where he actually has some resources. Also, he will likely be able and willing to step outside of the practice gym and raise funds for the program and NIL.
He has won at every level and has proven he can recruit the portal!
According to public records Calhoun's salary is $300,000 plus bonuses, so he certainly should entertain this position at a salary below what we pay Dambrot.
He will probably be in the mix for the WVU job.
Read about coach Calhoun from the YSU site below:Jerrod Calhoun is now in his seventh season as Head Coach of the Youngstown State University men’s basketball program after being named to the position on March 27, 2017. Calhoun is the 13th head coach in program history.Calhoun, who owns an 11-year career record of 220-134, has 96 wins at Youngstown State and owns a 76-52 record over the last four seasons, has elevated the Penguins’ basketball program to unprecedented success. He is the first coach in program history to lead the Penguins to a regular-season conference championship after guiding the Penguins to an overall record of 24-10 and a 15-5 league mark en route to the Horizon League Championship. The 24 wins tied the program record for most wins in a season and the 15 Horizon League victories also set the record for most conference wins. For hMen's Basketball » Game Thread - Fordham University Rams (A) » 2/25/2024 8:01 am

This was another exmple of us getting outcoached. Three issues last night's coaching:
1. Our substitutions were terrible. We go on a double digit run and then all of a sudden 3 of the guys who helped make the run come out. This happens all the time and it kills us. Dambrot does not run with groups who are hot and change the momentum.
2. Fordham had a strategy for Grant and we did not adjust, We continued to dribble too much and not counterattack, or run anything on offense.
3. Fordham took advantage of Jake and Kareem in the post. Jake was lost on defense and Fordham created mismatches, switches, and posted him up. It was clear they were going after him and we did not counter by putting in someone with more size. They did the same against Kareem. We actually subbed Jake for Kareem to get even smaller. We have a very long team, and we should never be in a position where we are outsized.
On the positive, I am really becoming a fan of Necas. Although he continues to shoot poorly from 3, he has a very high basketball IQ, has great height as mentioned last night, and he is big, He is also young, so he has a lot of upside. Over 17 years he has worked his way up the ladder from a video coordinator up to the Associate Head Coach of a successful Big-Ten program. Coach Knight deserves an opportunity to be a head coach!
According to public records, Knight makes between $400,000 and $625,000. Should be affordable to a program looking to give a young man who was one of the 40 under 40: rising stars by The Athletic.
Brandon Knight is Candidate #2! Read his bio from the Rutgers site below:
Brandin Knight heads into his third season as Associate Head Coach with Rutgers men’s basketball in 2023-24 and his eighth season since he joined the team as an Assistant coach joining Rutgers University on April 18, 2016. A New Jersey native with a reputation as one of college basketball’s rising coaches, he has advanced to 12 NCAA Tournaments as either a staffer (ten) or student-athlete (two), including four Sweet Sixteen appearances.
In 2022-23, the Scarlet Knights became the first team in RU history to amass four consecutive winning seasons. RU reached postseason play in three consecutive seasons with a trip to the NIT. In 2021-22, Knight helped RU return to the NCAA Tournament in 2021, making its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1991. The Scarlet Knights returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2022 marking the first time RU has made the big dance in consecutive seasons since 1976.Along with, the Scarlet Knights fourth straight season with double-digit Big Ten triumphs.
