Men's Basketball » Penn State at the game » 11/21/2015 3:33 pm

This was a wonderful win. Moving forward, we need to get better offensively inside. We can't count on the hot 3 point shooting that we had last night, even with DC and MM. The ability to be balanced will protect us on off shooting nights.

Jeremiah's offensive performance was unexpected. Hope he can continue to contribute in that way; he can be counted on to work hard on defense and rebounding regardless.

Penn State is limited on offense and will have a very long season ahead of them. That comment is not to diminish the very hard work we put in on defense last night.

I loved the fact we out rebounded them. Sanders is a beast.

It's amazing to me that year in and year out SBU has a better team than us especially given their resources and location.

Being stronger can only help. Agree that it's only one part of the picture.

What are the thoughts about Spencer Littleson, who is committed to Duquesne? From the video, he looks like he can shoot from the outside. I don't want to be stereotypical, but he does not look to be particularly quick. This is based on very limited video.

Men's Basketball » Duquesne men's hoops coach Ferry gets contract extension » 7/01/2015 9:32 pm

The writing was on the wall when Coach Ferry was appointed to the team to select the new AD. Do you think he was going to appoint someone who would fire him?

Men's Basketball » State of the Program Article » 5/06/2015 1:07 pm

I found the blog to be very interesting. The elephant in the room is facilities. We spent some money to upgrade Palumbo while others are spending much, much more. To quote the article, there is an arms race in the A10 regarding facilities. It is clear that we are not going to do well in that battle. So this makes the coach's job much more difficult.

Quote from Archie Miller in the first few months after being hired at Dayton: "It's been overwhelming in terms of the support."
Quote from the Dayton AD after extending Miller's contract last year: "The University of Dayton is committed to a national-level basketball program."

Phoenix: So your opinion is the coach Ferry can recruit, but can't coach?  You may be right. Or it may be that he isn't recruiting very well and that explains the problem. Or he may be deficient in both. Regardless, it ain't working.

Rich brought a style that few could match. He always had a kind thing to say.

Coach Ferry was quoted in the paper as saying that the team made significant improvements from the beginning to the end of the year and that he would have liked the season to go on a couple of more weeks to see how much better they would become. I agree that there were improvements, but the upside is not great. Yes we have a good guard coming in from transfer status. Yes we have a nice mid size big man coming in as a freshman. But, this team has far too many holes moving forward to make any meaningful improvement. No post season play next year.

Phoenix: I see you made no comment. Neither will I. The article says it all.

Men's Basketball » Fordham » 3/04/2015 6:42 am

Fordham's last 5 games at home: Win over LaSalle. Win over St. Joseph. Win over St. Louis. Lose to UMass by 6. Lose to RI by 1. Like us they are a much better team at home. This will be a difficult game. What's new.

Men's Basketball » St. Louis » 2/26/2015 9:44 am

Kudos to the St. Louis coach for having his team line up and applaud our two senior basketball players while they were being honored. Class act.

Men's Basketball » U Mass » 2/13/2015 3:28 pm

They are big and long. We will need to have our bigs, including Jordan Robinson, play well. I hope the coach doesn't sit them in favor of smaller players. They need to get on the court and gain experience.

In addition to what he did as head of the university, he was the foremost authority on contract law in the US.

Men's Basketball » Insomnia » 2/10/2015 9:19 pm

Interesting article in today's Trib about Matt Driscoll, the coach at North Florida. His comment is that it's about the Jimmys and Joes, not the Xs and Os. I have always thought that 90% of college basketball is recruiting. Our cupboard is bare, at least for this year. A better coach may have gotten more wins out of this group, but we were never going to be very good. Possibly the people sitting out, the recruit coming in and the replacement recurits for those who leave may make a difference. Or possibly not.

Men's Basketball » George Mason » 1/31/2015 12:36 pm

Iron Duke: The Washington Post article about GMU hoops shows how difficult it is to have a consistent program. They have spent a lot of money on thier coach and their facility is much better than ours, but they are mired in a struggle to compete. Thanks for referencing it.

Men's Basketball » George Mason » 1/30/2015 7:44 pm

I truly believe the Dukes will win tomorrow night. We will have 5 in double figures.

Men's Basketball » Bonnies » 1/22/2015 10:02 pm

I agree with Duqkurt. This is who we are. I expect to lose and if we almost win I derive some joy. Pathetic but true.

Men's Basketball » Bonnies » 1/22/2015 10:31 am

Diner: Hard to believe but our out of conference SOS was 245 and the Bonnies was 326. We benefit by playing Pitt, PSU and ROBERT MORRIS!

Men's Basketball » Bonnies » 1/20/2015 5:12 pm

Alhough their record is better than ours, their out of conference schedule was much easier than ours. Their record on the road is poor. Interestingly, their roster is filled with JC transfers. They do have a very good big man and an outside shooter, but this is a winnable game.

Men's Basketball » St. Louis » 1/15/2015 10:51 am

Ray Goss and JD referred to pour defense being so porous that St. Louis was doing a "layup drill."

Men's Basketball » St. Joe's » 1/08/2015 7:32 am

We won last night because the Hawks shot poorly from three point range and did not try to work it inside consistently. Our zone defense was better than in prior games, but they had open looks that did not drop. Ferry's move to the man to man with 18.6 seconds left was smart; St. Joes had difficulty getting off a good shot. There probably was a foul on the last shot that was not called, but I am not complaining. Coach should have taken J. Jones out in the last 90 seconds and put in Jordan Stevens because he is a very good foul shooter, a better ball handler and because Jones was limping.  The Dukes played hard all night and sometimes you need luck to win at the end.

Men's Basketball » This is no fun » 12/29/2014 1:50 pm

As a result of years of therapy, psychotherapeutic drugs, meditation and prayer, I am able to attend the games and leave happy. I found that changing my expectations so that I expect we will play poorly allows me to avoid frustration and anger. And on those occasions when we actually play well, I get the seratonin boost of joy. I just go with the flow.  Try it. It might help you too.

Men's Basketball » If your son were good enough to play in the A10 » 12/24/2014 9:52 am

I was trying to make a point by this question. Duquesne provides a solid education and the opportunity for a good social experience. But we are lacking from a hoops standpoint. I can see someone local choosing to come here. I can see someone who thinks he can turn a program around coming here. But if you want to play in front of people in the stands and have a decent chance at getting into meaningful post season play, this is not the place to come. So our coaches have an uphill battle in recruiting. We don't get the player who everyone in the A10 wants. We have to get players who have potential and hope that they develop. It's a difficult job.
