Indy: It is a Teammate (Broome) of Chad's that is a candidate for Player of the Year. Chad still has his "knack for picking up technicals" He got ejected in the Alabama game for a Flagrant Foul. Is that the firmer Dukes player Chad Baker still at Auburn? I was in attendance today. Too much blame on the coaching staff here. We missed the front end of two 1 and 1's late. We had two open dunks where the player elected to go for a lay-in instead and blew it. We had 13 more TO's than them. It was by far the most physical game that I saw this year. Schmidt is notorious for that. That forced us to use more than normal substitutions. Dinkins had to score and play point guard. He can't do that for 40 minutes. I agree that Rozier did not have a good game. But he had to spell Dinkins. The same with Wilborn and Dixon. Dixon and a pretty bad leg injury in the first half but coach had to use him. Not having DiMichele for most of the season really had a negative impact. So wrap that all together. Let's see what happens with the Portal. We definitely need a superior point guard that we look to score 8 to 10 points. We need a 6'10" center at 230 to 240 pounds not 215. And yet again, another late game collapse and concerns about end game coaching. I hope DJ learns and improves for next year. It sure seemed our talent level was better than our record. But, at least we are in a better position than some. Rhode Island would kill for our size and Archie Miller still hasn't won a tournament game in 3 years. I am not a Rozier hater. But, I got to question why he is in there on defense with a minute left and you are up by six. Wow. Can we keep the politics off this board? It's a basketball forum. Somehow we morphed into comments about the fear of job losses. Dukes looked lethargic, not ready to play and boy it surely showed.Just embarrassing to watch. You cannot DJ was quoted by the Trib after stating "I didn't think anything was short on effort and energy, but I think we were a little shell-shocked in the beginning". After going 0-5 in the last 5 games, the pitchforks have come out, as well they should. At least two of these games we should not have lost. We can't shoot free throws, we start slow and don't show any urgency until the last 5 minutes when we are down by 10, Necas, Hronsky, and Dixon have regressed, and the ball movement is pathetic. I get that DJ is young and new and learning. But, this was a team that made the round of 32 and had Dixon, Necas, Hronsky, DiMichele, and Rozier returning. For them to fall off so much is disturbing. I put some of that on the assistants who should have as much a hand in player development as DJ. KD had very experienced support. I question if Dru has the same. Well, let's face it. Losing Jimmy and Dae Dae left a huge hole in the team. All the transfer players, with the optimistic projections about their talents, don't come close to replacing those guys. How many close games did we win in the final minutes last year with Jimmy breaking down a defense with moves to the hoop and Dae Dae getting fouled in the final minute and actually making his free throws? This team doesn't have the players to win in those ways. Barre gets clobbered underneath, no call, and Dru stands there like a statue and says nothing? Really? Wake up dude and have your teams back. I have heard it repeated several times that Dru is the type of coach that players like. But, maybe he is too soft and needs more of an edge. KD and Frank Martin sure wouldn't stand there and say nothing. They might get technicals. But, you know where they stand. It's hard to watch these games after last year's run. They can't rebound, defend against the three, or create turnovers. The offense looks out of sync. The entire team just looks slow. How many times has someone been out of position when the other team takes a three? I remember one play from last night when a Duquesne player lost the ball, fell onto the court, and stayed there watching before making a slow effort to get to his feet and chase down the play which resulted in another Panther score. Is it possible the pre-game practices are too intense and this is stealing the legs from the players? I seem to remember that KD eased up on these a bit at one point during last year's season. If you look at Jimmy Clark's body of work while at Duquesne (passing, defense, three point shooting, rebounding, steals), it sure seems a case could be made that he could be drafted. I'm curious what others think. Here's an item that would seem to qualify for an April Fools story - except that it is factual... I am really tired of the Big East poaching our conference whenever they feel the need. I would rather see the two conferences merge completely and produce a super conference spread across the east coast and Midwest. How is this for irony? The Cougars last made the Tournament in 2021 as a 6 seed and lost to UCLA - an 11 seed. UCLA went on to the Final Four. Congrats to these amazing Dukes! I was surprised to see that Robby Carmody is in the portal again. He still has a year left of eligibility (next year will be his 7th) because of all the time he was injured. I believe Dru deserves the chance to prove himself as a head coach. I would not look anywhere else. Phil95 referenced KD's coaching tree which includes Shaka Smart and Lamont Paris. KD never passes up an opportunity to praise Dru. That's good enough for me. Go elsewhere for a high profile coach and you most likely will take a step back for a year or two. Looking for a big name proven winner? How about Will Wade? It wouldn't be the first coach we hired from McNeese State. But, hires like that can bring a lot of risk. No thanks. Stick with Dru. Unbelievable... Thank you Dukes!! Duquesne could best help those 8100 by reigning in the cost of their education. The last time Duquesne went to the NCAA, tuition was about 12K for a four-year degree and starting salaries were probably around 12-14K per year. Today, tuition for that same four-year degree would be around 180K and starting salaries would be around 60K. So, starting salaries are up about 4X and tuition is up about 15X. I understand why UMASS would leave the A10 to strengthen their football program. But the MAC is not the A10. This could negatively impact their basketball program. Ask Temple how that is working out. As a practical matter, Bernadette should be reaching out now to Temple to explore their interest in returning. In the post game conference, there was a reference by Dae Dae about some bad blood with a coach on the opposing team. I assume that might be Carl Thomas. Does anyone know what that might be about? In that video Necas is playing against the freshman chemistry lab team from St Ann's. :-) I'm just reading the tea leaves. But, I have to believe the decision has already been made that Joyce is the next coach when KD finally makes a decision to retire. Interesting case now developing in Tennessee. Evidently, NCAA rules forbid schools from discussing NIL money during the recruiting process. The University of Tennessee is under investigation for numerous violations. Resulting from this, the AG in Tennessee has filed a lawsuit against the NCAA to stop its enforcement of this ban. It appears many other SEC schools would support the suit. The wild west of NIL is about to get a lot wilder.Men's Basketball » NCAA tourn » 3/16/2025 11:44 pm

You are right. That was a comment I heard one of the announcers make leading up to the Auburn-TN game. But I think he was confusing it with the Julius Erving award for best small forward.
I'd love to see VCU make a deep run in the NCAAs, and with six A10 teams in the NIT, one of those to come out on top.
BYU seems overconfident again this year - some comments on their board about the inferior A10.Men's Basketball » NCAA tourn » 3/16/2025 7:13 pm

Byu, 6 seed vs A10 11 seed. Sound familiar?
Yes, that's the same former Duke, and he has been mentioned as a candidate for the NCAA national player of the year!Men's Basketball » Game Thread - Saint Bonaventure Bonnies (A10 Tournament) » 3/13/2025 8:26 pm

If Dixon had a bad leg injury, what happened to Barre? He pretty much disappeared in the last few games.Men's Basketball » Game Thread - Saint Bonaventure Bonnies (A10 Tournament) » 3/13/2025 2:38 pm
On a separate topic, with the trend for college teams hiring GMs today, is that something Duquesne is considering?Men's Basketball » Game Thread - Saint Louis Billikens » 3/08/2025 10:27 pm

The best advice I ever had on that subject came from my father-in-law (who was very successful) when he said to me - "I've been fired from a lot of jobs ... Some of them I even liked!"Men's Basketball » Game Thread - Richmond Spiders » 2/06/2025 9:56 am

We will be lucky to win 5 games in conference. Focus next year on recruiting better guard play and look to high schools and jucos as much as the portal.Men's Basketball » Game Thread - Saint Peter's Peacocks » 12/03/2024 9:30 pm

USC finished near the bottom of the Pac 12 with an overall 8-15 record with both Bronny James and DJ Rodman (Dennis' son) on the roster. On paper, that would seem really hard to do.Men's Basketball » Duquesne To The Big East? » 3/24/2024 10:09 am

Solving that is a much more complex task than the cost of funding a basketball team. Downgrading to a lower conference or eliminating the sport entirely would make as much sense as cutting funding to the team to raise more money for the Tamburitzans. But I would like to see more of what he can do.
a rebuild is going to happen naturally, there are what, 7 guys out of time on this roster. Coach with no contract, probably has had enough, and will retire, spend time with his family. Thats a rebuild.
Lets pretend Dixon, Barre, Necas, Hronsky, Rozier and DiMichele are back. Hopefully they come back. Thats not a bad place to start.
Dixon really seems to respect Dambrot, he might leave if KD is done. Same with Rozier.
PG is a glaring need, so hit the portal for a good PG. Get two.
Focus on getting quality, not quantity.
I agree, next coach doesnt need to be some sexy highly paid hire, but should be someone looking to move up, and won at a lower level than the A10. Hopefully they hire a good search agency, or Harper is already putting a list together.
