What no one is considering and sadly it is the POINT, salary. Although we are celebrating and reveling in our run it takes money. Ford was acknowledged as the highest paid coach in the A-10, many of the names listed on the “wish list” are making more than KD.

People who I have spoken to that are close to the Xavier program tell me they have been advocating for the Dukes all along. I can also say that prior to Gormley and Harper there was no stomach for meeting the Big East criteria. Big East definitely wants back in the Pittsburgh market.

If I’m not mistaken since the NCAA took over the NIT they have a policy of inviting conference winners who do not make the NCAA. That would make Richmond a pseudo automatic qualifier.
That also takes up a portion of the 32 team bracket.

Sadly one of the difference makers in today’s game could be a very familiar face Amari Kelley has been a very serviceable 5th year senior. City I admire your enthusiasm but having been to Mason I can’t see a Dukes win.

City, my point is he didn’t need to make big time adjustments he got his kids to play harder and smarter. I’m sorry I have watched a ton of games and other than a possession or two I don’t see the Dukes playing zone. Maybe we aren’t switching as much but I don’t see a zone. DiMichele is a defensive liability who makes up for his deficiencies by playing hard. Necas, Savrasov and Drame all would have been better solutions.

How many teams do you see who substitute within the first 4 minutes of a game????
That has been a staple of KD since he got here. It is ridiculous.
So you start guys just to say you started them and then they disappear.

Wildwood I agree with much of what you have said except I have to push back on Will Wade. IMHO his actions while coach at LSU would have warranted him coaching high school before he got another chance.

City, not everything revolves around X’s & O’s.  What coach put his team in a better position to win?  I think that’s undeniable. I have put forth my position on the horrible substitution patterns, the lack of plays for Dae Dae the horrible offense. Good coaches put their players in the best position to win. The all out man to man defense KD demands gives no quarter to either Clark or Dae Dae. I would rather expend as much energy on offense as defense. where do Clark and Dae Dae pick up most of their fouls?

When Fordham made their run to open the second half what were we saving timeouts for. Waiting for the TV timeout is a fatal flaw. Most runs seem to put KD in a stupor, this wasn’t the first we have seen. I really hate to point out individual deficiencies but Rozier is an absolute failure as a PG and truly warrants no time. Look at the stats. His turnover rate is higher than his assist rate, scoring is non existent and due to size his defensive problems are obvious. And finally I will repeat a past comment DiMichele starting for whatever reason KD wants to come up with is a failure.

City please take this as a serious question and me not trying to be a smart ass. How does Fordham score 26 points in the first half and 53 in the second without some adjustments?

Unfortunately this outcome isn’t surprising. The Dukes just don’t win big games. Dambrot’s mind set of this is what we do and we are not changing really echo’s that of Tomlin. We don’t adjust, I recall once again last year when we were in a good position going into the A-10 tournament. We played a LaSalle team that just two weeks earlier we beat on their court by 17 and get out played and out coached in the rematch.

KD went for broke by stuffing the rooster with 5th year players and then never used them. IMHO we were far too dependent on guard based scoring which has changed slightly but to admit that a walk on guard is your hardest working player is an inditement of the staff. We do absolutely nothing to help Dae Dae get open for 3’s thus forcing him to many bad shots. I realize this is back a little but think back to what Duke would do to get JJ Redcick open. How many double screens have you seen? Or better how much movement have seen by our offense.

Finally one last point is the rebounding, or lack there of. KD thinks we are a decent rebounding team. I beg to differ. Last night again we were pounded on the boards 41-28. We are last in the conference in % of offensive rebounds allowed this isn’t new this year.

I watched a taped version of the game yesterday and I was struck by both broadcasters wanting to question KD about has use of 12 men in the rotation. What really perked color man John Giannini’s interest was the fact that Necas and Savrasov played key minutes and that no indication was given to their possible roles during the game planning and shoot around.
Im sure we have all questioned KD’s substitution pattern but this sort of added to the randomness of it. How suddenly does a player get time?  I also noted that in the pregame access he gave the announcers KD said he thought it was best for his team to win ugly. 🤔

Gents, it seems to me that many times after tough loses this board likes to look at the officials instead of the collapse of the team and more importantly the style that it plays. It’s extremely difficult to draw fouls when you are launching 3’s and really have very few players who take the ball to the hoop HARD. Many of the drives made by the Dukes have them falling away from the hoop or defender fearing a block.
The Dukes by their nature want to pressure their man to man no matter where many times resulting in stupid fouls 40+ feet from the hoop. Clark at Bonaventure on his 5th foul is a classic example.
We are last in the conference in offensive efficiency and we are last in the conference in points scored from the foul line. We are last in the conference in the percentage of points we give up at the foul line.  This is no conspiracy this is our style of play and it’s been that way since KD got here!

BTW Richmond lost to UMass at home last night. Both teams shot the same amount of foul shots. So much for A-10 wanting two teams in the NCAA's. We ALL root with our hearts but come on.

CLK, you hit on all of the correct points. Nothing but excuses and they all fall back on the head coach. To say that this loss is only on Grant & Clark is to totally miss every other aspect of the game. The minute Rozier entered the game he immediately turned the ball over three straight possessions, DiMichele, as hard as he plays, was beaten like a drum continuously by back door cuts which are the staple of this teams offense.

Dambroat in his press conference claims that Davidson gives you open three’s and that may be but the officials in this game gave every indication that any reasonable effort to drive to the hoop would result in a foul. Davidson had 6 team fouls in the second half with around 10 minutes left and I don’t believe we got to 7 until 4 to 5 minutes later.

To start two players and have them play 4 to 5 minutes or less and then never see the court again is absolutely ridiculous. I have no idea what message that sends to your team. The rotation of players is just as ridiculous. Savrasov can’t get off the bench and then you expect him to come in play well. Necas who was an outstanding international player against top competition has been turned into a defensive robot who offensively is afraid to make a mistake. With his size and strength he shouldn’t be limited to throwing up an occasional 3.

Finally, this coach has been given EVERYTHING he has asked for and then some. The return on that investment has been poor to say the least. Please don’t forget that last year we entered the A-10 on a high note only to watch him get schooled by Fran Dunphy. Instead of calling it a day the AD rewarded him with a trip to a who cares tournament only to be embarrassed again by a lesser opponent.  Enough is enough it’s time to move on.

I would never put the outcome of a game on officiating, it allows for to many errors to be forgiven. As with all sports that rely on officials it seems that the players get faster and more athletic making it more demanding.  Jamie Luckie was one of the 3 officials on Tuesday and to say the least he has lost a step but to me the bigger issue is the work load these guys take on.
One of the categories KenPom tracks is officials and the games they do. Many of these guys especially the top 75 or so work 5 times a week and the 20 or so every night.  I don’t know how that’s possible.
Quick example, Ron Groover considered one of the best, has worked 57 games this year and has worked 7 consecutive days since Thursday of last week. On Sunday he did a game at 4PM in Wilmington NC, noon Monday he had the Michigan/ Ohio St game in Ann Arbor.

The team cannot overcome coaching ineptitude, how many times do you have to see this ending. Look at each teams final shot with the game tied. Clark throws up a 30ft. three and their guy drives to the hoop and gets fouled.
How many times to we have to see the ball thrown into Dixon who is a marginal foul shooter and an inexperienced ball handler.
How does Hronsky who has played in less than 10% of the teams total minutes all season play 21 minutes and contribute 3pts and 2 rebounds.
DiMichele 27 minutes 3pts 4 rebounds
Mahorcic 2-11 from the field 0 rebounds
How does any player on this team know where they stand.
How do you call a time out to set up some sort of play to try and get a rebound after Clark misses the first foul shot and not remind him the ball has to hit the rim.
Coach this team doesn’t need a sports psychologist it needs a coach!

Phoenix I couldn’t agree with you more. His teams have looked and played terribly in every big game. Let’s also not forget the OOC he has been given over his years is a joke. Let’s also not forget HE set the expectations higher before a game was played this year.

Although all of the points are valid I have one point of contention with KD that I believe is tough to repudiate. How many if any of his players show growth? Other than some cases of a natural maturity of a players game I don’t see the jump of a player who is being pushed to a higher level. As a matter of fact I would argue players are either stagnant or taking steps backwards.

Many of the defensive lapses, the rebounding issues, poor shot selection etc. have been a part of his teams the last few years. Our inability to adjust or change I believe is part of the end of year collapse since teams get a read and know how to exploit our weaknesses.

BTW to Walsh and some of the other idiots in the local media, kids still want to play and many times they will play for coaches much more than schools. Pitino at Iona is a good example of this. Yesterday Southern Utah beat Rice and their big scorer was a Illinois transfer!!!!!
We also can not underestimate the ability of coaches to totally out coach their opponent. Painter at Purdue suffered that fate the other night. Like KD he stubbornly adhered to man to man defense, frequent and inexplicably substitutions and an offense built around a small freshman point guard that other teams quickly figured out.

I’m legally challenged so I’m not sure how this was accomplished but, Tshiebwe was able to circumvent the rule that foreign players can not be paid since they would be in violation of their student visa. I guess he could take on US citizenship.  I’m sure the legal minds will be hot on this one especially with the recent influx of foreign talent.

Phoenix right on the money no pun intended on Grant. It didn’t get a lot of notice but early this season he lost two players to the portal and that further shortened his bench for the remainder of the season. Tyrone Baker a 6’9” sophomore forward and Kaleb Washington 6’7” forward.

Gents, the A-10 has plummeted badly over the past few years. KenPom had it ranked 12th out of 32. Looking at the NIT and understanding that they have to first invite conference winners whom did not win their conference tournaments it leaves little room for the A-10. Dayton ended at 78, St.Louis at 96 and Fordham at 139 in KenPom. Being a 15 team league with almost half rated in the lower third is an obstacle to this conference gaining anywhere near the prominence it once had.

Pistol you and CLK are absolutely correct in your assumption that it would have been a no brainer to sign on for this outcome based on last year’s disastrous season. What you can’t deny is the frustration of knowing it could and should have been better. Believe me I only speak from the frustration of knowing my time of seeing a tourney appearance is on the clock so to speak. It’s also the frustration of seeing what I believe is an obstinacy by Dambrot to necessary change.

We all seem to overlook certain truths about this team and expect different results. I’ve said it before in another thread and I’ll state it again Dambrot will not compete with the true elite teams until he changes and I don’t see that happening.
We were soft all year being beaten on the boards continuously. We were 14th in the league for giving up offensive rebounds. Dae Dae averaged 4.7 rebounds a game similar to our “bigs.”
We relied far too much on 3 point scoring. No one points to the 14% showing yesterday as evidence of this. 40% of our shots are 3’s.
We get to the foul line less than anyone else in the league because other than Clark we don’t have a finisher.
our best 3pt shooter had 4 attempts yesterday because we do NOTHING in our offense to get him open looks.
We brought in a 5’8” guard who was supposed to be an assist machine who averaged 3.4 for the season and was a defensive liability.
City Duke one last thought for you, you said Dixon was a 5 who needed to “learn,” how to play the 4?????
Dixon is a 4 who Dambrot forced to learn how to play the 5!!!!!! Further more how can anyone explain a player of his talent playing 282 minutes total for the YEAR.
This coach would rather play experience than talent.
