Davidson is a good choice. St. Louis would provide a good education, a good social experience being in a nice city and a good basketball experience. If your son were good enough to play in the A10, where would you want him to go? Assume he is a good student and has the skills to have a solid career as a basketball player, but not good enough to play in the pros. He wants to play in the league and every school would offer him a scholarship. The reality is that we have to do the best with what we have.So what is the best course going forward? In my view, play the young guys so they have a chance to develop.JJ doesn't start. Replace him with Eric James. Play our young big men as much as possible so they have a chance to develop. The only upper classman who would get significant time is DC. The rest come off the bench as substitutes. This year is done. Unless we get the young players ready for next year, we will not get out of the cellar for years to come. I'm not saying this will work, but I do know that what we have been doing has no chance of success. AND I would hire someone who can teach how to shoot free throws. I hear that they practice them every day, but I have trouble believing that the practice is being done correctly. Coulter was moved to the two guard position because he took too many shots, failed to make shots and failed to get assists. When Stevens is on the court, he plays the same way. The result is no change in the guard position when Stevens is playing. This is due in part to the fact that Mason does not penetrate and does not create his own shots. He takes the open shot, but is too slow to initiate plays. I was at the game. This provides a perspecitve beyond what is seen on TV. I think Mike Rice is the all time leader in the toughness department. A little before my time, so this is based on the lore of his playing career. Bob Knight. Bob Huggins. Suzie McConnell Serio. These coaches make their players tougher.I am sure there are many others who do the same. A critical part of ccoaching or being a drill instructor is to motivate the player or recruit to do things he otherwise would not do, to go beyond previously set boundries. It happens all the time. I view coach Ferry's comments after the Pitt game as part of his method of motivating this change. Although he was clearly frustrated, he kept his temper and provided a thoughtful analysis of the situation. I was impressed by that. To see how someone reacts in a difficult situation tells a lot about the person. His demeanor struck a nice balance. It's time to end the series with Pitt. While it's fun to reminisce about the distant past when Pitt was routinely the underdog, what are our chances of playing a competitive game this year? Pitt seems to be down and we seem to have better talent than in the past, but are playing inconsistently. In 2011, we lost by 11; in 12 it was by 21 and last year by 17. Can we at least play them close? Can we actually win? I think this is as good a preseason analysis that we will see. However, I don't think the analysis justifies the conclusion of a NIT bid. Hope I'm wrong. I hope he enjoys his college career. He has chosen a good academic university and he has the chance to be a star in the Southern Conference. I think it is fair to predict that we will finish near the bottom of the league next year. Whether that means last or third from the bottom really makes no difference. My hope is that our team makes progress so that the following year will be an improvement. Military service is ingrained in my family. My grandfather served in the Marine Corps in France in WWI. My father was in the Army in the Battle of the Bulge in WWII. My brother and I served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam era and I have another brother who served in the Army during the same period. The Memorial day services have a special place in our hearts. I am overwhelmed by the bravery shown by other who I met. Duquesne has never failed to miss an opportunity to offend its students, alumni and supporters. I'm not sure what we had with him. From his brief playing time, I was not impressed. He may have developed or may not have. I wish him we'll . If Gill could be a consistent three point shooter, that would lessen pressure on Micah. Teams with big men who can shoot from the outside have an advantage. I agree he showed flashes and he has three more years to work on this. As to Robinson, I haven't seen him, so he is an unknown. As to Watkins, his season never took off due to injuries. So what we have inside to compliment McCoy is a big unknown. Help at guard is unquestionably a need. Hopefully we will make progress next year. This is only Ferry's second full recruiting year. Now it's apparent why we lost to them previously. As Danny Nee said in virtually every post game interview, "Now it's time to go back to the drawing board." I don't just go to three games. I have been a season ticket holder for over 30 years and I rarely miss a game. I do not want Coach Ferry to be a failure. I hope he succeeds. I posted that I thought we would make minimal improvement next year. Who he recruits for next year will go a long way toward determining how we will do two years from now. I have also posted that he has to be given four recruiting years, not counting the first one, because he was hired late. But how anyone can be satisfied with where we are now is beyond me. The win over George Mason cemented our position as the third worst team in the league instead of the second worst. Our RPI is second worst. Our non-conference strength of schedule was far and away the worst in the league at 324; Fordham was next at 254. We are losing the leading scorer in the league in Soko. Jeremiah Jones is a good defender, but if he is good enough to start for our team, the team can't be very good. Coulter is inconsistent at best and either Ridenour has to step up or we need to add a PG or both. Watkins essentially had a wasted year, likely due to injuries, but when he recovered, he never broke into the lineup. Gill was a surprise; he provides length and occasionally shoots well. I hope he improves on that. How much Robinson will give us is unknown, having not seen him in action. Mason and McCoy are solid. So we are coming off of a year where we had a weak schedule, but improved down the stretch, but we are losing our most productive offensive player. We need a good recruiting season and we need to develop the players who remain. I see next year as another baby step toward the middle of the pack in the A10. Sorry for not being euphoric, but I am trying to be objective. The Richmond game is the only one I left early from this year. We had no answer for them. I don't have confidence we can win this game. Some things are more important than today's game. We were favored over George Mason. Like everyone else who is posting about the state of the Dukes, I am very frustrated. However, Jim Ferry has had only one true recruiting year. Any coach needs at least three full recruiting classes before evaluating him. So I believe we have to continue to exercise patience. Note that this is coming from a 30 year + season ticket holder and from a person who disagreed that RE should have been fired at the time he was and in the way he was. But Ron is gone and we have to focus on how to improve on our current status. I bet Rich Spear was laughing his arse off.Men's Basketball » If your son were good enough to play in the A10 » 12/23/2014 8:09 pm

Micah couldn't hit any shots in pregame warmup or in the warm up before the beginning of the second half. At the end of the game, I thought he showed leadership. He was talking with team mates, encouraging them and consulting with them. And it was apparent that they were listening to him. The team looked confident before the last posession.
Coach Ferry had used up his timeouts before our last possession. Remember that there was a call that the ball went out of bounds off Duquesne when PSU had 3 seconds left on the shot clock. The refs looked at the replay and both teams got an extra time out out of it. We defended PSU's shot and had about 13 seconds to get off our last shot. PSU defended the perimeter well on our last possession. I can't blame the coach.
Our foul shooting was abysmal.
Powell is overmatched inside. He will be a good and perhaps great player if we can use him as a forward.
My comment about Donovan Jack is that Coach Ferry tried to get him to come to Duquesne, but he asked out of his contract when Coach Everhart was fired. After that, Ferry commented that Jack would be a project. I have seen him play against us and also in other games and there is no doubt he would be an asset to our team. However, I can't blame Ferry; he tried to get him.
Gino Thorpe played his best game at PSU.
PSU pads the attendance figures just like us.
This was a game between two mediocre teams. Men's Basketball » Toughness » 12/09/2014 3:10 pm
